English Minor with a Creative Writing Concentration

For students who enter UM in Fall 2022 or later. All other students may choose to follow these requirements for the Creative Writing minor, or they may follow the old requirements listed below.

Requirements

Students may declare the minor in English with a Concentration in Creative Writing through their school or college. Submitting materials to the Creative Writing Program is not required for the minor. The student completes, with a grade of C- or better in each course and with an overall GPA in the minor of at least 2.0, 15 credits at the 200-level or above beyond the credits earned for freshman composition.

The 15 credits must be distributed as follows:

1. ENG 209; Introduction to Creative Writing (3 credits);

2. After taking ENG 209, complete TWO of the following courses (6 credits):

  • ENG 290: Beginning Fiction Workshop
  • ENG 292: Beginning Poetry Workshop
  • ENG 390: Intermediate Fiction Workshop
  • ENG 392: Intermediate Poetry Workshop
  • ENG 404: Creative Writing (Prose Fiction) (instructor permission required)
  • ENG 406: Creative Writing (Poetry) (instructor permission required)
  • ENG 407: Creative Writing Special Topics
  • ENG 408: Writing Autobiography

3. One ENG literature course at the 200-level (3 credits);

4. One ENG literature course at the 300-level or 400-level (3 credits).

Old Requirements

For students who entered UM before Fall 2022. These students may also choose to follow the current requirements for the Creative Writing minor listed above.

2. Two additional creative writing courses, to be taken after ENG 209 and chosen from one of the following three tracks:

  • ENG 290, followed by ENG 390 (fiction track)
  • ENG 292, followed by ENG 392 (poetry track)
  • ENG 290 and ENG 292, taken in either order (mixed-genre track)

3. One literature course at the 200-level;

4. One literature course at the 300-level or above.
