Goran Reading Series, 2010–2011
During the 2010-2011 academic year, the University of Miami’s Creative Writing Program honors Professor Lester Goran’s 50th teaching anniversary by bringing to campus several of Goran’s former students, writers who have established their own esteemed reputations as authors and professors of Creative Writing.
This year, writers from the Goran Reading Series offer a public reading, a Master Class for graduate and undergraduate majors, and a community workshop with our partners at Books and Books. All events are free and open to the public.
The Goran Reading Series is sponsored by the Creative Writing Program, The Department of English, The College of Arts and Sciences, The Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, The Office of Executive Vice President and Provost, The School of Communication, and our community partners at Books & Books and WLRN.
Michelle Richmond (UM MFA ’98) is the author of The Girl in the Fall-Away Dress, Dream of the Blue Room, No One You Know, and the New York Timesbestseller The Year of Fog. She received the Hillsdale Award for Fiction from the Fellowship of Southern Writers, the AWP Award, and the Mississippi ReviewFiction Prize. Her stories and essays have appeared in Playboy, Glimmer Train, Oxford American, Salon, The Guardian, The Believer, Best American Fantasy, The Kenyon Review, The Missouri Review, and elsewhere. She also blogs for the San Francisco Chronicle. She has taught creative writing at the University of San Francisco, California College of the Arts, St. Mary’s College of Moraga, and Bowling Green State University. She currently serves on the executive council of The Authors Guild.

Paul Perry (UM MFA ’97) is the author and editor of a number of critically acclaimed books including The Drowning of the Saints, Goldsmith’s Ghost, and The Orchid Keeper. A winner of the New Irish Writer of the Year Award, he most recently published a book of poetry, The Last Falcon and Small Ordinance, which was described by Dermot Bolger in The Sunday Business Post as “the work of a singular imagination,” and 108 Moons, the selected poems of Jurga Ivanauskaite, which Paul translated into English with Ruta Suchodolskyte. He teaches creative writing for Kingston University, London, and University College Dublin and is Course Director in Poetry for the Faber Academy in Dublin.

Chantel Acevedo’s (UM MFA ’99) first novel, Love and Ghost Letters, won the Latino International Book Award and was a finalist for the Connecticut Book of the Year. Her fiction and poetry have appeared or are forthcoming in Prairie Schooner, American Poetry Review, North American Review, and Chattahoochee Review, among others. She is currently Assistant Professor of English at Auburn University, where she teaches creative writing and co-edits the Southern Humanities Review.

Terrence Cheng (UM MFA ’97) is the author of Sons of Heaven, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick as well as a Borders Original Voices selection. In 2005 he received a Literature Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. His second novel, Deep in the Mountains, was a Junior Library Guild selection. His short story and essays have appeared in Bronx Noir, Glimmertrain, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. He is currently Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of English at Lehman College-CUNY.

So you Majored in Creative Writing: Now What?
An interactive panel discussion with three successful undergraduate alumni: Crissa Jean Chappell, Tom Cavanagh, and Hayes Roth.
Novelist Tom Cavanagh has worked in children's television, writing
numerous programs for Nickelodeon, Disney, Anheuser Busch
Entertainment, and many others. Transitioning into multimedia,
Cavanagh now works in the world of eLearning.
YA author Crissa Jean Chappell teaches creative writing and cinema
studies at Miami International University of Art and Design. Her debut
YA novel, TOTAL CONSTANT ORDER, is a Florida Book Award medalist
and a New York Public Library Book for the Teen Age.
Hayes Roth, Chief Marketing Officer at Landor, is responsible for
directing all marketing and new business development efforts for Landor
worldwide, as well as serving as senior manager on major global branding
projects.
Alumni, Majors and MFA's and those interested in the Major are all invited.
